Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Healthcare (TCIH) offers an array of solutions to help people regain their mental health. Evidence-based integrative practices, such as mind-body therapies, nutritional modifications, acupuncture, herbal medicine, and mindfulness-based interventions, have been shown to promote mental resilience, reduce stress, and complement standard psychiatric care. Overall TCIH methodologies help people overcome stressful episodes more effectively. By offering non-medical options for prevention and treatment, they can play an important role in supporting the implementation of the EU’s comprehensive approach to mental health and of the EU Youth Strategy.

Across Europe, best practices in mental health care increasingly incorporate non-medicinal interventions alongside conventional treatments. Evidence-based practices such as nature exposure and mindfulness-based interventions, shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression (ref.5, ref.6) are being actively applied in clinical and community settings. Countries like Germany and Switzerland have developed integrative models that include mind-body medicine, naturopathy, and anthroposophic therapies within certain psychiatric clinics. In Sweden, preventive mental health services often incorporate mindfulness, yoga, and other holistic practices. Overall, Community-based initiatives across the EU have also successfully utilized TCIH approaches to promote psychological well-being.

AIM of the Webinar

This webinar aims to explore the role of TCIH in mental health, highlighting best practices, the emerging evidence, policy recommendations, and innovative models.

By bringing together policymakers, health professionals, researchers, and patient advocates, the discussion will contribute to a more holistic, integrative vision for mental health in Europe, fostering collaboration between different disciplines to support evidence-based, person-centered care, aligned with the One Health principles.
